Behavior modification training is the key to altering undesirable behaviors. This can range from a simple thing such as a bad or annoying habit to fear caused by a negative experience or simple aggression. Modifying unwanted behavior can be achieved by teaching the dog a stress-free replacement behavior. This results in a happier and less stressful life for the dog and it prevents aggression to build up and escalate.
Some negative behaviors are extremely difficult to eliminate. This could be because these behaviors are already well established, have been successfully performed by the dog on too many occasions or have been rewarded in the past. Certain bad behaviors are also self-rewarding. This means the dog finds the behavior itself rewarding without receiving an additional positive stimulation. And then there are countless behaviors, especially aggressive behaviors, which are almost impossible to erase. Bad behaviors can be established due to improper socialization during the imprinting phase or the dog genetically possesses an extremely dominant or nervous disposition. Since it is very complicated to eradicate already established negative character traits, the single reliable solution is to modify the canine’s bad behavior and to replace it with a learned “replacement behavior”.
With this in mind, we now need to focus on positive reinforcement of the desired behavior instead punishing the unwanted behavior. This applies to behaviors such as jumping on people, aggression, as well as numerous other circumstances when our dog does not display the behavior we expect from him. And we all know what is said about the forbidden fruit, it seems to be so very sweet. In any case, once the canine has a clear concept of what is expected, it becomes easy for him to act in the appropriate manner, which in return will lower the dog’s stress level.
