It’s February, and that means its Pet Dental Health Month sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical Association. This is the time of the year when veterinarians around the country raise awareness about the importance of good oral hygiene in cats and dogs. A large number of animal health problems can be mitigated, delayed, and in some cases prevented entirely with proper pet dental care.
Although periodontal disease affects cats and dogs equally, there is stronger evidence supporting a link between periodontitis and some major health problems in canines, including heart disease, kidney failure, diabetes, and various infections. The best thing you can do to prevent canine dental disease is to start you dog on a dental care routine as quickly as possible. If you are unable (or unwilling) to brush your dog's teeth on a regular basis, ask your veterinarian about alternatives such as special dog dental chews or food/water additives. It';s also important that you schedule regular vet exams and teeth cleanings to keep your dog’s teeth in good shape.
Unless you started brushing your pet’s teeth at a young age, it can be difficult to start teeth cleaning routine for dogs and cats. However, regular tooth brushing is one of the best preventive health measures you can take as a pet owner, so it’s important that you start your dog or cat on a brushing routine quickly.
